Admissions Testing

GRE

Take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and arrange with the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to have the scores reported directly to the Iowa State University Admissions Office (Institution Code = 6306) during the period they are valid.  Self-reported and a copy of the test scores are acceptable for the BBMB application evaluation process, but should you be offered admission to our graduate program,  Iowa State Admissions requires your official test scores as reported by ETS for the final step in the admissions process. The GRE can be taken in a computer-adaptive format at practically any time. To locate a testing center and schedule an exam, students may phone 800-GRE-TEST for locations in the U.S. or Canada, or visit the GRE web site for international locations. Note that there is usually a six-week wait for an open seat! We require applicants to take the GRE general test, which includes Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning and Analytical Writing exams.  We encourage applicants to take a subject test in biochemistry, cell and molecular biology; chemistry; biology; or physics if they think it would improve the quality of your application. Note that we do not receive the scores until six weeks after the examination is taken, so we encourage you to take it as early as possible. Examinations taken after December will delay processing of your application. There is no minimum score required to apply to our graduate programs.  Past experience has shown, however, applicants who score in the 60th percentile are more likely to succeed as a graduate student in our programs.

TOEFL

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required for all applicants whose native language is not English and who have not received a college/university degree in the United States. Please arrange with the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to have your scores reported directly to the Iowa State University Office of Admissions (Institution Code 6306) during the period they are valid.  Self-reported and a copy of your test scores are acceptable for the BBMB application evaluation process, but should you be offered admission to our graduate program,  Iowa State Admissions requires your official test scores as reported by ETS for the final step in the admissions process. The TOEFL score remains valid at ETS for two years from the date the test was taken.  Should you be offered admission to our graduate program, Iowa State Admissions requires ETS reported scores for the final step in the admissions process.  Once ETS has reported your test scores, the scores remain valid throughout the application process. BBMB requires a minimum score of 79 on the internet-based and 550 on the paper-based test. Information on taking the TOEFL can be found on the TOEFL website. IELTS is another form of testing of English proficiency, and the minimum acceptable test score for the IELTS t is 6.5.
