"CBiRC: Lessons Learned and Lessons Taught"
The Center for Biorenewable Chemicals (CBiRC) with the vision of “providing a novel environment for the research, training and education of a new cadre of engineers and scientists that, in turn, will generate a new paradigm for optimizing the integration of biocatalyst and chemical catalyst systems for the biorenewable chemical industry”. CBiRC is based at Iowa State University, but has engaged over 30 faculty at 12 US-based institutions, that are in fields ranging from biochemistry, chemistry, metabolic engineering, chemical engineering, computational modeling and life-cycle analysis.
We proposed to mimic the historical development of the petrochemical industry and develop a metabolic-based intermediary platform chemical approach that would be coupled with chemical catalysis to establish a potential new paradigm for the emerging biorenewable chemical industry. In this seminar, I will review how the Center was initially conceived and assembled, and summarize its impact at Iowa State University and to the development of the biorenewable chemical marketplace.
